1947 at Greenville – Play By Play

Hello everybody and welcome to the 1947 Alabama State League
All-star game. we’re coming to you from Greenville where the Lions
will host the visiting 1947 All-Stars. The Lions take the field
here in the first , defensively for Greenville: Perry Roberts
at first base … Francis Ankenbrandt at second … Al Marchesano
the shortstop… Bob Rucker at third … the trio in the outfield
… in left it’s Henry Olivas…in center J. E. Carlisle … and
over in right Wilbur Hester … Manager Sam Demma is behind the
plate, and on the mound for the Lions … the right-hander Max
Peterson…he’ll be facing All-Stars starter … right-hander
Joe Beaugez … so settle in, we’re ready to start this game!

 Top Of The First Inning: 1947 All-Stars at
Bat

 Emil Bozick will start it off here in the 1st … bats
right…the offering from Peterson… it’s popped high in the
air … Marchesano’s backing up … he has it measured…and
he puts it away … one away.

Ben Catchings up to hit…the pitch from Peterson … it’s
looped to right … Hester coming on … but he won’t get it…and
Catchings’s on at first with a single.

Next up…Walt Quimby…Ben Catchings is on the move … this
one is hit … it may carry … it’s back…Carlisle gets there!

The All-Stars take the field here in the first … get your
score card…defensively for 1947 … Bob Engle at first base
… Ben Catchings at second…Bubba Donner the shortstop …
Walt Quimby at third … the outfield consists of…Bob Sprentall

lead … here’s the pitch…
and it gets by Lindsey! … it goes back to the screen … Hester
will score…Carlisle races around second … but he puts on

Carlisle
stretches his lead off second … the pitch … upstairs with
a fast one…Demma doesn’t offer … and that’s ball number four

Perry Roberts to bat for the Lions…he
bats from the left side…runners at first and second…Beaugez
into his motion … delivers … swung on … it’s a fly ball
to the gap in right…Bozick’s racing over … but he won’t get
it … it’s to the wall … Carlisle scores…Demma’s rounding
third…the throw comes in to Engle … Roberts’s in standing
with a double…and they’re holding Demma at third…All-Stars
0, Lions 2…So a run scores on Roberts’s double … and the
Lions now lead 2-0

The Lions have … two on…second and
third no one out … the bottom of the first inning…Bob Rucker
up to hit…All-Stars playing for the out at first … the pitch
comes in … the swing…his bat snaps it two! … the barrel
is headed out toward short…and the ball pops over second into
shallow right … it’ll be a base hit … Demma scores…Roberts
is rounding third…they’re waving Roberts in…here comes the
throw home…here’s the play at the plate … and he’s … safe
easily … and Rucker holds at first…All-Stars 0, Lions 4…so
the single drives in two … and the Lions now lead 4-0.

Al Marchesano to face Beaugez…no outs…runner on 1st…Rucker
well off first … Beaugez brings it home … grounded deep into
the hole … Donner’s over…he’s got it … the long throw to
first … one away … Rucker moves up…there was no chance
to get two.

Henry Olivas getting ready to go…1 out…runner on 2nd…Beaugez
working on Rucker to hold him close … the pitch … Beaugez
misses again…Olivas trots down to first with the walk.

Francis Ankenbrandt is now up…runners at first and second…Beaugez
kicks and delivers … that’s skied to right center … medium
deep…Gilbert roams under it … he calls … no problem …
both runners are tagging…but they’re holding them … as the
throw comes back in.

Max Peterson coming to bat…two outs…Beaugez delivers …
popped foul behind third … Quimby’s over … he’s under it
… and makes the catch…For the Lions … 4 runs on 3 hits
… one miscue for the All-Stars … they leave 2…so they have
moved well in front … Lions over the All-Stars 4-0…and they’ll
try to protect that lead in the 2nd

strikes out the side.

We’re at the head of the order for the Lions … Joe Beaugez
will face … Hester, Carlisle and Demma…Here’s Wilbur Hester
to start it off…the pitch comes in … hit like a bullet …
Catchings waves at it … but it’s by him into right…and Hester
racks up a base hit.

J. E. Carlisle to face Beaugez…No outs…runner on 1st…here’s
a pitch … Carlisle swings … strike! … Hester is off to
the races…Lindsey strongarms it down there … going to be
close … tagged…safe!…Hester steals second…Hester now
with an aggressive lead … quick move to the plate … Carlisle
dribbles it toward third…Quimby will have to hurry … the
snap throw to first … in time to retire Carlisle…and Hester
moves to third.

Now at bat Sam Demma…1 out…runner on 3rd…infield drawn
in … now Beaugez pitches … grounder to third … Quimby gloves
it…now the long throw … out by a step … two gone … Hester
has to hold third.

Now coming up Perry Roberts… 2 outs…runner on 3rd…the
offering to Roberts … fastball … it’s a nubber to the left
of the mound … Donner charges…the throw to first … and
he’s gone.

For the Lions … no runs on one hit … one left … after
two Lions up by 4

Top of the order here for the All-Stars in the 3rd … Bozick,
Catchings and Quimby…Emil Bozick to lead it off…Peterson
fires it in … and Bozick is bunting … pushes it past the
pitcher…Marchesano fields it … fires to first … and they
get him! … one away!

Next batter…Ben Catchings…the pitch … popped up to the
right side … Roberts looking up … trying to find it … waiting…puts
it away! … two away.

Here’s Walt Quimby coming to the plate…the offering …
it’s popped up … in the air to the left side … Marchesano
comes in…he’s under it … and he makes the catch … to retire
the side.

For Greenville it’ll be … Rucker, Marchesano and Olivas…here’s
Bob Rucker to lead it off…the pitch comes in … he hits a
lazy fly ball … Rucker got under it … and now so does Sprentall…it’s
in the bag … one away.

Now at bat Al Marchesano…Beaugez with the pitch … high
fly ball to deep right center … Gilbert’s racing to the track…so’s
Bozick … Gilbert waves him off … and brings it down … two
gone.

Two out…Henry Olivas comes up to bat…Beaugez delivers
… pulled sharply to Quimby … room service bounce … the
long throw to first…and they get him … three away.

Beaugez sets them down in order … after three Lions up by

For the 1947 stars here in the 4th … Engle, Lindsey and
Donner…Bob Engle will start it…here’s the pitch … swing
and a miss … and Engle is out … he didn’t get cheated on
that cut…one away.

Emory Lindsey getting ready to go…the pitch comes in …
it’s a ground-hugger to short … Marchesano gloves it…and
easily throws out Lindsey … and that’s the second out.

Bubba Donner to face Peterson….now Peterson pitches …
Donner doesn’t offer … and he draws a free pass…Donner heads
down to first.

Now coming to bat for the All-Stars, Bob Sprentall…firstbaseman
Roberts’s on the bag … Donner with a substantial lead … they
start the runner…hard bouncer to Ankenbrandt … and it hits
the runner … he’s out … score that a single.

For the All-Stars … no runs one hit … they leave 1 …
they had a chance but could not convert…the score still 4-zip
… Lions leading.

Bottom of the fourth: Greenville at bat.

The Lions will have … Ankenbrandt, Peterson and Hester here
in the 4th…Francis Ankenbrandt starts it for the Lions…the

Max Peterson to face Beaugez…No outs, runner on 1st…Peterson
squares … he brings it home … Peterson pushes it down the
first base line … nicely done…the only play is at first …
Peterson has himself a successful sacrifice…Ankenbrandt moves
down to second.

Wilbur Hester to face Beaugez…runner on 2nd…Ankenbrandt
extending his lead … he brings it in … and it’s a hard liner
to Catchings…great catch! … two gone

Next batter…J. E. Carlisle…Beaugez working on Ankenbrandt
to hold him close … the pitch … Carlisle lays off the pitch…ball
four … J. E. takes his base … setting up the force.

Sam Demma getting ready to go… 2 outs, 1st and 2nd…the
runners take their lead … now the delivery … Demma pops it
up behind the plate…Lindsey tosses his mask away … drifts
back … near the stands … and he makes the catch…side retired

For the 1947 All-Stars, it’ll be … Gilbert, Beaugez and
Bozick…here’s Jim Gilbert to lead it off…the pitch … checked
swing … they check with the first base ump … he punches him
out…one down

Joe Beaugez to face Peterson…All-Stars manager Norm Veazey
looking at his scoresheet…Veazey is recalling pitcher Beaugez
… Manny Russo is enlisted to hit for him … bats right…he
grabs a bat … heads out … so Beaugez goes four innings …
the line on him … 4 runs…3 earned … on 4 hits … he stands
to lose it unless the All-Stars…can make up the 4-run deficit…Russo
up there…Peterson brings it … Russo tops it toward second
… Ankenbrandt races in and short hops it…throws … scooped
up by Roberts … but not in time … Russo beats it out!

All-Stars hitter Emil Bozick’s up…1 out, runner on 1st…space
on the right … Russo leading off … Russo is off with the
pitch … he delivers…Bozick goes the opposite way … bounced
to the right side … just out of Ankenbrandt’s reach…Francis
Ankenbrandt ran over to cover second … and that let the ball
get through…and Manny Russo owns third easily … and Bozick
collects a lovely hit…perfectly placed through the hole left
by the Lions infield.

Two on … Ben Catchings up to hit…1 out, 1st and 3rd…infield
deep … Russo takes his lead at third … here’s the pitch from
Peterson … swung on…bouncer to Ankenbrandt … goes to second
for one … back to first for two … yes!…two for the price
of one … and they get out of the inning.

The half for the All-Stars … no runs 2 hits no errors …
they leave 1…they had a chance but could not convert … after
four and a half it’s still 4-0 Lions.

Bottom of the fifth: Greenville at bat.

The Lions will have … Roberts, Rucker and Marchesano here
in the 5th…All-Stars’ Manager Norm Veazey displaying a little
strategy … Emil Bozick is moving…he’ll be playing center
field…Henry Delay is coming on to pitch for the All-Stars …
he’ll bat second…Delay’s a southpaw…he’ll try to hold them
to let the All-Stars get back in it…Jim Gilbert will move to
second base for the Stars…Manny Russo’s now playing right for
the All-Stars.

Here’s Perry Roberts to start it off…the pitch … lazy
fly to center … easy chance for Bozick … he’s got it …
one down.

Lions hitter Bob Rucker…the pitch … checked swing …
and a roller back to the mound … Delay is up with it…takes
his time … and tosses it to Engle for the putout.

Now at bat Al Marchesano…2 outs, bases empty…the pitch
to Marchesano … grounder to Gilbert … he scoops it up …
flips to first…three away.

For the Lions … three up three down … Lions still with
a 4 run lead.

After five innings: Greenville 4, All-Stars 0

Top of the sixth: All-Stars at bat. 

Greenville will now face … the heart of the All-Stars lineup…Quimby,
Engle and Lindsey coming up…Walt Quimby leading off the 6th…Sam
Demma has made a pitching change for the Lions…coming in to
relieve Peterson is Jim Kerce … so Peterson goes five innings…the
game for Peterson … 5 hits … walked 2 … he struck out 5
… he stands to win it…Kerce is a right-handed pitcher…Kerce
winds up … Quimby swings … it’s a high bouncer to third …
Rucker gloves it … sets…long throw to first … and he gets
him … one away.

Bob Engle to face Kerce…and the pitch … line drive base
hit to right … Hester fields it and throws it to second…a
clean single for Engle.

Now at bat Emory Lindsey…1 out, runner on 1st…Engle well
off first … Kerce into his motion … delivers … it’s a bleeder
to the right side…Ankenbrandt has only one play … flips it
to first … out at first…and that’s out number two … Engle
goes to second.

Bubba Donner is the next hitter…2 outs, runner on 2nd…Kerce
looks back at Engle on second … here he comes … ooooh, that
looked good…but the ump doesn’t budge … and Donner draws
a walk … Kerce shakes his head…setting up the force.

Two on … the top of the sixth inning
… Bob Sprentall up…Kerce with the pitch … cut on … and
it’s pulled hard to right … base hit…they were off with the
hit … Engle’s around third … he’s headed for home…here
comes the throw … SAFE!…slid around the tag … the throw
to third … safe!…and Sprentall holds at first … single
and an RBI.

So the single drives in one … the All-Stars are on the board
… score 4-1

Alright… … right-handed batter Jim Gilbert now walks out
to bat …runners at the corners, two outs…Donner into a little
shuffle at third … and the pitch … rapped back to the mound…Kerce
grabs it … this should do it … throws over to first … and
gets him…and the side is retired.

The line for the All-Stars … one run 2 hits no errors …
they leave 2…they had good chances for more … but still trail
by 3 … after five and a half 4-1 Lions

The Lions will send out the bottom of the lineup … Olivas,
Ankenbrandt and Kerce…Henry Olivas starts it for the Lions…the
pitch … high and tight … the ump says ball four … and Henry
will get down to first.

Francis Ankenbrandt to face Delay…Olivas bluffs going …
the pitch … Ankenbrandt swings … strike!…Olivas is going
for the steal…the peg … the play at second … safe! …
he got in the back door…and that’s the Lions 2nd stolen base
in this game…Ankenbrandt’s back in the box…facing H. Delay…Olivas
moves quietly toward third … the pitch to Ankenbrandt … way
off the plate…that’ll be ball four … and a free pass for
Ankenbrandt.

depth … the runners take their lead … the pitch … grounded

Top of the seventh: All-Stars at bat. 

For the 1947 Stars, it’ll be … Russo, Bozick and Delay…To
get it going, Manny Russo…Bases empty, Stars behind 1-4…Kerce
to the wind … hit to straightaway center field … plenty of
room…Carlisle moves under it … and takes it in … one away.

Here’s Emil Bozick …Kerce kicks and deals … breaking ball
… called strike three…he’s out for excessive window shopping
… two gone.

Henry Delay walking up to bat …All-Stars skipper Norm Veazey
is calling him back to the bench…Veazey is recalling pitcher
Delay … Doyle Nunnally will pinch hit for him … bats left…he
grabs a bat … he’ll take his time getting to the box … Delay
pitched two innings…the line on him … no runs … on no hits…Doyle
Nunnally coming up … he knows how to handle the cork…Kerce
deals … checked swing … ball four … and he trots down to
first.

One on … the next All-Stars batter is Walt Quimby … he’s
a left-handed batter…Doyle Nunnally is on the move … he delivers
… hit hard to right center…Carlisle scampering back … at
the track … he leaps … he’s got it!…and the side is retired

Here come the big guns for the Lions … Carlisle, Demma and
Roberts…Dolly Lambert is coming on in relief for 1947 … he’ll
bat second…for Lambert this is his first appearance … he’s
a southpaw.

J. E. Carlisle to lead it off for the Lions … he bats right…Lambert
comes home with it … Carlisle chops it toward Engle … he
backs up and plays the big hop…he waves off Lambert and takes
it himself … one down.

side … Engle’s over … he cuts it off…turns and flips to

Engle will start it off here in the 8th … and he hacks from
the right…He cranks and fires … Kerce misses … ball four
… Engle will go to first.

Emory Lindsey to bat … from the right…Kerce cranks it
up … Lindsey squibs it to the left side … a swinging bunt
… Rucker charges it…picks it up and guns it to first …
and they get him! … one down…Engle moves to second on the
play

second … the pitch … hit like a shot…Ankenbrandt waves

One out Donner down at first … Bob Sprentall walks up …
he bats left…Firstbaseman Roberts’s on the bag … Donner with

around second…but the coach flashes the stop sign … he’ll

he’s asking Kerce for the ball…coming in to relieve Kerce is
Pershing Flowers … the right-hander…Kerce pitched two and
a third in relief … his line … 2 runs … so far … on 4
hits…3 walks … one strikeout … he’s responsible for the
runners…Flowers will be looking for the double play … it’s
his game to save…the All-Stars have … one gone Donner on
second…Sprentall on first … down by 2…the top of the eighth
inning …

Jim Gilbert steps back in…the pitch … skied high to the
left side … Marchesano’s drifting back … he’s under it…infield
fly called … and he makes the catch … and the runners hold.

The Lions will face the top of the order here in the 9th …
Bozick, Lambert and Quimby…Emil Bozick will lead off the 9th
… he bats right…Flowers lets it go … cut on … a topper
out front … Flowers has it … goes to first…in time for
the out.

Dolly Lambert is scheduled to hit … here’s Dolly Lambert
coming to the plate…Manager Veazey will let him hit…the pitch
… he swings … it’s a fly ball to the gap in right … Carlisle’s
racing over…so’s Hester … it drops in for a hit … and he
will make second easily…a double for Dolly Lambert … and
that’s the 10th base knock for the All-Stars in this game.

against Flowers…here’s the delivery … grounded to the right
side … Roberts knocks it down … he’s up with it…Lambert
rounds third … Roberts fires to Rucker … Lambert dives back

hit against Flowers…now Flowers pitches … grounded hard wide
of third … Rucker takes it on the short hop…he’ll go to first
… and they get him … and that does it.

So the Lions top the All-Stars … the
All-Stars leave the tying run at the plate … the Lions take
the 4-2 decision…here’s the line … for the Lions … 4 runs
on 4 hits … no errors … they leave 7…for the All-Stars
… 2 runs on 11 hits … they committed 2 errors … and they
leave 11…Peterson gets the win…his 1st … Beaugez takes
