Bennie Russell Stadium,
Alex City, Alabama |
|
Russell Field was the home of the Alex City Millers of the Georgia-Alabama League.
If you’ve ever been to Alex City, you know that the name Russell appears everywhere. This is due to Benjamin Russell, father of the stadium’s namesake and owner of Russell Manufacturing Company, the textile giant known to current day sports fans as the maker of Russell Athletic team jerseys. The Millers were originally owned by three local businessmen from 1947 through 1949. Financial difficulties caused them to throw in the towel at the end of the 49 season. In a community meeting, 393 fans purchased the the club by buying $17,000 worth of stock. A nine-man board of directors was elected to run the club including, Bennie Russell, Robert Russell, and Edith Russell. « Local Sources » (probably named Russell) donated $4,000 for repairs to keep Russell Stadium in decent shape. |
