Cramton Bowl,
Montgomery, Alabama |
|
Before the AFL Montgomery Rebels, the Southeastern League Montgomery teams played
most of their seasons at Cramton Bowl. Cramton sits directly across the street from Paterson Field, and is still used for high school football and the Blue Gray Bowl, played each Christmas Day in Montgomery. In 1949, Paterson Field was built, and as a result, Cramton Bowl’s baseball grandstand was torn down and football seating was added across center and left fields, making the stadium a a football only venue. Looking at the aging bowl today, very few Montgomerians would be aware of the field’s baseball history. Babe Ruth played there in a spring exhibition as the Yankees headed north for the upcoming season, and Lonnie Frey, Bob Ferguson, Marion Adair, and Harry « The Hat » Walker all starred at the Bowl. |

Looking from behind the east grandstands, the old baseball grandstand wraps around
the northwestern corner of the endzone, where home plate once stood. |
