Reunion – The Thomasville Ramblers
Charles East went to a reunion of the semi-pro « Thomasville Ramblers » in Thomasville,
Alabama in June of 2002. . He reports that around 15 of the former players
from 1940’s and 1950’s showed up, including former AFL player, Robert England.
The Thomasville Ramblers played in numerous semi-pro leagues, including
the Blackbelt League and the Pine Belt League.

There are two players
with AFL ties  represented here:  Roy « Double » Edge.  Edge played
briefly with pre-AFL Donaldsonville before the town of Thomasville met (and
exceeded) his professional salary.
and Robert England.  He played for
Holt « Cat » Milner at Dothan in 1952. England batted .314 that year, his last
in professional ball.

Charles also talked with length with Jack Cleary,
who is (baseball player and scout)  Ivy Griffin’s nephew.  He told
me Ivy’s professional career came to an end with a broken collar bone
following
his altercation with an umpire in 1924. It was Griffin who signed a number
of AFL players, including England  and Dothan stars Jimmy Cantrell, John
Beasley,  and Jim Coker.
