The scouting evaluations of Ivy Griffen,
Jack Sanford, & Bill Herring
Thanks Charles East
Ivy Griffin was a true baseball man: a player at many levels, including the majors,
a scout, and a manager. He was involved in the game he loved right up to his
death in a car accident in 1961. Griffen signed many players in Georgia, Florida,
and Alabama to contracts, including Pete Hamner and Jimmy Cantrell. Griffen
scouted for the Cleveland Indians organization in the early fifties, and many
of the cards in this collection are his reports of some of the players he scouted
during that period.
Ivy Griffen in his playing days
The handwritten list above shows Griffen’s many stops in baseball.
Remarks read: Bird dog agreement with Lilburn Odum of Chatom, Ala. Recommended as
outstanding hitter since age 15.
Also recommeded by man who recommended Carvel
Rowell to me. Boy is 18, rugged build should develop.

Carvell
« Bama » Rowell, mentioned in the remarks, played with the Boston Braves and Philadelphia
Phillies in the 1940’s.
