Alabama Florida League Documents – Laney Letter

The letter reads:

Mr. Frank W. Colley
Columbus, Ohio

Dear
Mr. Colley:

         I wrote
you yesterday and told you I was opposed to drafting an umpire during the
season.
I wish to take this statement back.  At the time I
said
that I thought it meant anybody could be
drafted, but today I am in receipt
of a bulletin from Mr. Trautman’s office and the only man that can be drafted
(?) is a man with at least 2 season behind him.
I don’t expect to
have any with that much experience except maybe the umpire in chief and if a man
is still in class D after two years he had better quit and start something else.
After reading the proposal I am in favor of it and have had my clubs
call me today and say it suited them, so I am sure that my league will vote favorable.

Sorry I was in such a big hurry to write you yesterday. See you at
the meeting.

Yours
very truly,

League President Charles T. Laney’s letter to the Minor League Offices in Columbus,
Ohio reads (at least to me) like a sarcastic appology for not agreeing with
the proposal.  Laney’s approval at this point seems to be a consession to
get in step with the national office’s propsal, but it’s obvious he won’t enact
it.
