1949 Alabama-FLorida League Season

The
1949 AFL SEASON

OVERVIEW

The 10th AFL saw the return of Charles
Laney to the League Presidency after a nine-year absence. The
season began on April 18th, and each franchise had a new manager
except Greenville, which brought back Walt Tauscher for another
season. The Troy Tigers, winners of the 1948 league table was
fielded a team almost completely different from the year before.
This was mostly due to the league rules requiring 9 rookies per
team. Early in the year, Ozark jumped to the top of the table,
due mostly to the strong pitching of Spencer Davis. By June 1st,
Davis had 9 wins, second only to Geneva manager Carl Wollgast,
who had 10. For much of the first half of the season, Ozark,
Enterprise, and Greenville fought for the top of the table.
The first manager to be offered new employment
by his club was Joe Szuch of Brewton, who was replaced on May
29th by Norm Veazey. On June 1st, Andalusia manager Manny Russo
was given his walking papers and replaced by Arrows favorite,
Bob Engle. Dothan also changed managers in June, replacing Joe
Cavosie on June 18th with Jim Colley, and then replacing Colley
on June 22nd with Danny Long. One of the most exciting stretches
of the season occured in June when Ozark, Greenville, and Enterprise
fought to be in first place on June 26th, which would earn the
leader the home team slot for the annual all-star game. Ozark, which had been in first
for most of the season leading up to the target date, found Greenville
nipping at it’s heels a week before the 26th. By the 24th, Greenville
was a half game back, and on the deciding day, the Pirates had
overtaken Ozark by a half game. Greenville managed to keep that
momentum going and ended the season in first place. The Pirates
found a surprising opponent in the playoffs in Andalusia, which
had crawled out of the basement when Engle took over the reigns
and worked their way up into the playoffs. The Arrows rewarded
Engle with an easy victory over Greenville for the playoff championship.

 POINTS OF INTEREST

The league rules for signed players in 1949 stated that each
team could have 1 « class » player (player with experience
in the higher baseball classifications), 7 limited service service
player (player with limited professional experience) and 9 rookies.

Dothan was affiliated with the Montgomery Rebels.

Ozark was affiliated with the Nashville Vols.

Former big-leaguer George « Three Star » Henessey
managed Ozark.

The Greenville Pirates went 25-5 in the month of June. The
Pirates were a Pittsburgh farm team for the second straight year.

Troy was a Detroit Tigers farm team for the second straight
year.

Andalusia had a late June resurgence, giving up only 3 runs
in a 35 innings stretch. The Arrows had climbed from last place
to 4th place by season’s end.

Nat Nofsoner, Tiger catcher, made the All-Star team under
unusual circumstances:

The league’s eighth annual All-star
game was played on July 7th in Greenville. Sportswriters and
fans got together and made their picks for the team which would
take on the Pirates. A couple players on the initial list: Elwyn
Rider, Bill Pouncey, and Jim Mulheim did not play for various
reasons. Bob Engle, Andy Olsen, and Don Plarski took their places.
The All-stars won this one: 8 to 4. Carl Wollgast pitched 3 innings
of no-hit ball and Andy Olsen got the victory for the All-stars.
